Levels of Editing

There are different levels of editing; your editor will use the level suitable for each section. A full edit combines all of the following to refine your document’s structure, elevate its stylistic flow, and eliminate errors.

Copyediting is basic editing that focuses on grammar, punctuation, and word choice.

Substantive editing is a deeper level of editing that helps to improve structure, presentation of ideas, logical flow, and consistent use of terminology.

Quality assurance ensures consistency throughout the manuscript, including use of terminology, spelling, abbreviations, and headings.

Proofreading is an important last step in any editing project; the proofreader carefully inspects the manuscript, one word at a time, to pick up spelling errors, typos, punctuation mistakes, extra or missing spaces. This gives the manuscript a professional, polished look. Some manuscripts may only require proofreading.
